Over the weekend I unpacked like a mad man. My wife and I move moved six times in the last eight years. Most of our belonging have been packed up untouched and sitting in storage since we moved from Percy st in south Philly. Most of the things we kept and packed were sentimental items. Knowing we would be on the run for years, we only kept the day to day survival items unpacked, and trashed everything else. The crazy part is most of the things I kept were trivial, like someone else packed for me, thinking I may need so random item eight years later. Not really sure why I thought what I packed would be importing to me (in the future).
The one thing that I was really excited to un pack were four large Flight Cases filled with records. Most people that know me, know that; During the 1990's I went on a Hip Hop vinyl buying frenzy... Before eBay and the Internet this was no easy feat. I would describe as being like, a modern day Indiana Jones, risking life, limb and countless hours to find the holy grail of hip hop wax. As I unpacked a Tec 1200 and starting listen to some records in the middle of my new living room, it was like I went back in time. I remember vividly taking the El to Armand's (back when it was still on 11th & Filbert) trying to fit in and somehow be accepted into the DJ/collector secret society. The original Armand's was small and mad hood, but it became my shop of choice and eventual social hang out. Every time I went there, I headed to the "philly bin" first, snatching up every local underground 12" I could. After spinning records into the wee hours of the night, I wanted to share my top four from MY "philly bin" that you might have forgot about.
