sign, signs ,everywhere is signs...

Subliminal contact, is the underlining phenomenon behind adverts and signage. The goal of a well executed sign or ad is to grab the persons attention for that one moment and place a thought into their mind, via presentation! Whether it be the use of colors, style, pictures, wording, humor, or wit, the designers main focus is to get your attention and speak to you visually. (If you look that up in the book of jedi mind tricks it is in chapter 8 section 14). But all joking aside it really is a talent to be able to create a sign that removes a person from their normal thought process and thinking and implant the message you want to portray, well in a time long ago before all the vinyl cutting, sign painting and advertising was an art. Now a days any Joe Blow can graduate from college google a few stock images, photoshop it, and send it to a vinyl cut shop and WAAAALAAAAA...You have a sign. Heres a few oldies and a few new ones. Myself personally I have a love for the old signs and the hand touched feel that they leave behind, and respect the work it took to bring them to life, Knowing how to be able to rig and tie knots on the swings that they worked from so they would be able to work safe and not fall and die, sketch out the drawing by hand without modern tricks using projection screens and boom lifts. I have posted a few things in the past about signs and my passion for them, so continuing with my reiteration of that, heres a few more examples of the artistic, and simplistic signs that purvey our landscape.

Miles from nowhere.... and nowhere is now here!

I was born in the wrong era...Walldogs!

Original sketches and design layout for NYC transit system signs, there were multiple binders filled with detail of every sign that was installed on the transit system, size, placement, color, icon, etc etc...Did you ever think how much design was involved in such a simple everyday sign. Well it all started in the mind of a designer that was paid to go into the lab and cook up a product that would one day be the signs for the NYC transit system. hers a few of the specs, and a final product !

School for the cool, well atleast i think so.....

Perfection.

Handpainted HEX signs give barns and country houses character. I am sure they all have meaning as well that date back to the Dutch, but i just enjoy the simple yet graceful patterns that adorn our country sides!

This FANTASTIK font is fun, I like it alot, and the size of it says, pull over here or your going to miss something!!!

When signs die, they go to sign heaven...

This picture is tougher then a $2.00 steak.....

Made me think for a second, how bout you?

Walldoggy doggs....

Way before there was a guy on the radio screaming...SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY...monster truck and hot rod at the spectrum, this is how you heard about hot rod or funny car shows, this sign visually screamed at you! simple quiet yet affective.

Before I end this post I would like to acknowledge that there are a few good people still out there keeping the art and history alive and well today, ESPO and his West PHilly project are proof of that, and even more so is Colossal media they are awesome!
